Sun Stone History

The Sun Stone, or Heliotite, owes its name to its glittering glitter that recalls the color of the sun (helios in ancient Greek). It was so named in 1801 by Jean-Claude Delamétherie, French geologist and mineralogist. It is the hematite or goethite crystals contained in the stone that give it its orange reflections in the light, sometimes tinged with green or blue (the other name of hematite is the blood stone).

During antiquity, it was linked to the worship of the sun god, and was supposed to bring joy and good fortune to its owners. It was also believed to have mystical powers, capable of giving vigor and fighting the effects of poisons under certain conditions.

Among the Nordic peoples, the first great navigators, they accompanied the Viking chiefs to their graves to lead them straight to Valhalla. This ore would also have made it possible to guide these Danish navigators when they ventured out to sea without a compass.

During the Renaissance, gold set with heliolite was used to capture the light and energy of the sun during the practice of magical rituals. Heliolite was used by North American Indians for barter or decoration of objects. The history of this mineral has its share of legends, an Amerindian myth tells that one day, an illustrious warrior hit straight in the heart by an arrow spilled his blood on a heliolite stone, which gave it its color and great powers.
